Maggie Deall’s Out of Time, Out of Place collection captures the uneasy beauty of returning to places that once felt entirely comfortable, yet now carry a sense of disconnection. These works reflect Maggie’s own experience of revisiting familiar landscapes and cultural landmarks, where strong memories of belonging are layered with the unsettling feeling of no longer fitting quite the same way.

Animals become stand-ins for the artist herself—foxes, sheep, kangaroos, and llamas quietly occupy these spaces, their presence both whimsical and poignant. They are watchful, curious, and slightly out of step with their surroundings, mirroring the sensation of being present in a place but not entirely at ease.

Maggie’s vibrant palette brings this emotional duality to life. Neon pinks, electric blues, glowing oranges, and purples light up each canvas with energy, transforming feelings of displacement into something bold, joyful, and magnetic. The colours amplify both nostalgia and immediacy, allowing memory and the present moment to collide in striking, surreal compositions.

Out of Time, Out of Place is more than a series of visual stories—it is an exploration of identity, memory, and belonging. By reframing personal experiences through the lens of imagination and play, Maggie invites viewers to reflect on their own shifting connections to places and times in their lives. The result is a collection that is at once humorous, tender, and deeply human.
