About the artist
Debbie Wood is a proud Gomeroi woman and contemporary Australian artist whose multidisciplinary practice brings together painting, weaving, texture and cultural storytelling.
Working in oils, acrylics and mixed media, Debbie creates vibrant, layered artworks that express her connection to culture, Country and community. Her paintings balance contemporary expression with the enduring influence of Gomeroi knowledge and storytelling, creating works that feel alive with colour, movement and meaning.
Debbie is also recognised for her weaving practice. Using both traditional knowledge and contemporary materials, she creates intricately constructed pieces that honour the strength and continuation of First Nations cultural practices. Painting and weaving often sit alongside one another within Debbie’s work, allowing different materials and techniques to communicate connected stories.
Collaboration and bringing people together are important parts of Debbie’s creative practice. Her work encourages conversation, shared learning and a greater appreciation of the ways culture can be carried, celebrated and continued through art. She has participated in exhibitions that explore reconciliation, cultural connection and the power of artists working together.
Debbie’s paintings and woven works move comfortably between traditional and contemporary forms. They are expressive, tactile and deeply connected to identity and place.
Through her practice, Debbie celebrates Gomeroi culture while creating work that speaks to the present—work filled with strength, generosity, colour and a powerful sense of connection.
