About the artist
Maggie Deall is an Australian contemporary artist based in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. Known for her vibrant colour, expressive brushwork and richly layered surfaces, Maggie creates paintings filled with energy, warmth and a strong sense of place.
Working primarily in oils and acrylics, Maggie finds inspiration in the Australian landscape, florals and the beauty of ordinary moments. Her work often begins with a vivid acrylic underpainting before layers of oil are added, allowing unexpected flashes of colour to remain visible beneath the finished surface. This distinctive process gives her paintings their sense of movement, light and joyful spontaneity.
At the heart of Maggie’s practice is a fascination with memory and the emotional connection we form with familiar places. Landscapes, verandahs, gardens, old buildings, everyday objects and quiet moments all become starting points for paintings that feel both personal and familiar. Her work is expressive and impressionistic rather than strictly representational, capturing the atmosphere and feeling of a place rather than simply recording what is there.
A self-taught artist, Maggie spent 20 years as a NSW Police Officer before choosing to pursue a creative life and establish Yellowhouseart in Wagga Wagga in 2021. As the gallery’s founder, creative director and resident artist, she has created a welcoming space where regional artists are represented, creativity is encouraged and people of all ages can experience the joy of making art.
Maggie’s work has been exhibited at major art fairs throughout Australia and is held in private collections across Australia and internationally. Alongside her own painting practice, she teaches children and adults, supports emerging and established artists and remains passionate about making art approachable, inclusive and genuinely enjoyable.
For Maggie, art is about more than creating something beautiful. It is about telling stories, preserving memories, connecting people and finding moments of colour and optimism in everyday life.
